Cultureflow Intro
Learn the basics about the Māori language, culture and the Treaty of Waitangi
Cultureflow Intro is a programme that introduces absolute beginners to the Māori language, culture and the Treaty of Waitangi. This is not a language course.
How does it work?
Cultureflow Intro is a six session programme, usually taught in-house over 6 x 1.5 hour sessions. The format of the course is:
- Session 1 Māori language - Pronunciation, greetings and introductions
- Session 2 Māori language - Revision, pronunciation, numbers
- Session 3 Māori culture - Introduction to the powhiri (Māori welcome process) and do's and don'ts of visiting marae
- Session 4 Māori culture - Pa, marae, and Māori carving styles
- Session 5 Treaty of Waitangi - Historical context review of the settlement of Polynesia, Māori culture change and adaptation, Declaration of Independence and the text of the Treaty of Waitangi
- Session 6 - Assessment
We teach groups of people who enrol through Cultureflow and would welcome your enquiries about how to set up one of these courses.
Students also receive a course workbook based on the course lesson plans and an interactive CD-ROM that includes extra activities and resources to enhance the learning process.
This course is presented by a Cultureflow tutor in any of our New Zealand locations (please contact the Cultureflow team to find out whether there is a tutor near you).
